How do you co-ordinate custom calendars for 70,000 people taking part in thousands of different events across a single week?
This weekend sees tens of thousands of people travel to the Nevada desert for a week of action-packed fun, creativity, socialising, and much more in the annual magical ‘Burning Man’ celebrations.
In their words:
‘Burning Man isn’t your usual festival. It’s a vibrant participatory metropolis generated by its citizens.’
With such a huge gathering of people, and activities covering the physical, spiritual, and intellectual – and sometimes all three – organisation is a challenge, to say the least. But even when the event planning is complete, the attendees themselves need to decide how to spend their time there to get as much out of the festival as possible.
Burning Man + Cronofy
The events aspect of the festival, Playa Events, even has its own API to make life easier. Different camps can announce their events and they are made available on the API, making it a diverse playground for developers.
It was this, in conjunction with the Cronofy API, that inspired Nicolas Grenie’s project. His aim was to build ‘a tool for everybody to create their custom calendar for the event’, using Cronofy to make calendar connection and syncing easy for all 70,000 participants.
And the Burning Man calendar was born.
Nicolas’s creation, BurningCalc, uses the Cronofy API to help attendees plan their time accurately with minimum fuss. With so many events taking place, it’s important for people to make sure they aren’t missing out, double booking themselves, or at a loose end for a random time period. It also makes planning what to go to with other groups of people easier, and co-ordinating unofficial meet ups that don’t clash with anything else is a breeze.
To get started, simply connect your calendar of choice in a click. You can then search for available events by keywords and categories.
Then go down the list to see which events grab your attention. When you get to one you like the look of, simply click the calendar icon next to the day to automatically add it to your calendar for the correct slot. Just visit your calendar as normal on the device of your choice to see the events, and be notified of them as per your regular calendar notification settings. Simple!
We love how Nicolas has used the API and we wish all the attendees and organisers of Burning Man a fantastic 2015 event. Even if you’re not attending Burning Man yourself, seeing what Nicolas has created serves as brilliant inspiration for your own projects. Thanks Nicolas!
If you’re using the Cronofy API, drop us a line and let us know. We love to hear about the creative and handy ways you’re using it.
