Call Back to the Future: Hack 24 Challenge

Call Back to the Future

One of the biggest highlights of our year is Hack 24.

If you’ve never heard of it, Hack 24 is a local coding competition that lasts – you’ve guessed it – twenty four hours. That’s 24 hours of blood, sweat, tears, and caffeine as teams of developers rush to create something epic.

Hack 24

Last year, the challenge we set the participants was the Cronofy classic Ain’t nobody got time for that. We had some fantastic submissions and we loved seeing the clever ideas that all the teams came up with and executed in such a short space of time.

This year, we’re excited to bring a brand new challenge to the event. Read on to find out more…

(Not going to Hack 24? Feel free to take up the challenge anyway: email us with your project anytime, anywhere. You never know, you might get something special).

Hack 24 Challenge: Call Back to the Future

We all know APIs are super cool, but they are even cooler when they connect you directly to your users.

With Cronofy, some of our most interesting use cases come from reacting to an event being added, moved, or removed from someone’s calendar.

APIs make “no UI” solutions possible by turning things people already have installed such as calendars, messaging, email, etc, into an interface for your code.

Your challenge is to incorporate one or more interactions into your hack that involves reacting to a notification from an API.

The prizes

Every team challenge submitted automatically results in a £10 (or £20, if your challenge uses our API) donation to Framework, a Nottingham-based charity that does fantastic work helping prevent homelessness and providing the tools for homeless people to rebuild their lives. Every £10 means a vulnerable person will receive a visit from a volunteer (for some, the only person they’ll see that week). Every £50 provides a starter ‘move on’ pack, which contains essentials for someone who has nothing in their new home.

Each member of the winning team will get a £50 Amazon voucher. Your submission doesn’t have to use the Cronofy API, but if it does you’ll also be eligible for a special Mystery Box prize containing fantastic geeky goodies.
